FAQs

Where can I find affordable plus-size wedding dresses that look designer?

At The Dress Outlet, we are a wedding dress industry that does not compromise quality for low-cost plus-size wedding dresses. Through direct cooperation with designers, we offer complex lace and high-quality satins up to size 32 so that each bride can find her ideal dress at a reasonable price.

Are plus-size long dresses better than short styles for gala events?

Though plus-size long dresses are the norm when it comes to grandiose balls, the ultimate decision is whether you are personally on board with it. However, long gowns are highly flattering and are worn as short formal dresses in A-line or fit-and-flare designs that are becoming very popular in semi-formal evening events.

What makes a plus-size black dress a must-have for the 2026 season?

A plus-size black dress is the most versatile one. There is a movement towards "Textured Noir" in 2026, in which classic black clothes are revamped with 3D floral appliques or metallic embroidery so that they would be suitable for a corporate event or even a plus-size party dress moment.

How do I measure myself correctly for a formal dress?

To determine your size for a formal dress, measure with a soft measuring tape the widest circumference of your bust, your natural waistline, and the widest circumference of your hips, and then compare these measurements to the designer's specific size chart. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your chest when you're getting a measurement for the bust, but make sure it is completely parallel to the floor. To measure your waist, use your natural waistline, usually 1 inch above your belly button. When taking measurements for the hips, run it around the widest point of your hips and buttocks, usually about 7–9 inches below your natural waistline.

What should I do if I am between sizes?

When ordering a larger size from the size chart, it is always better to order the larger size because formal and evening dresses are much easier and less costly to order in than to alter them out. If a dress is too tight, the professional seamstress may not be able to widen it, as modern formal gowns don't have enough seam allowance in the material. On the other hand, if a gown is larger in size, a tailor can work the fabric to perfection, without risking damaging the structure of the gown. So when you're selecting a size, opting for the larger option means that you have enough fabric to create a perfect custom fit.

How much do formal dress alterations typically cost?

The cost of alterations for a formal gown is usually between $11 and $200 for basic alterations and may run over $400 if it is a complex restructuring or a modification of a heavily decorated gown, depending on the dress design. Common things such as replacing zippers, shortening basic straps, or a basic hem are usually at the bottom end of the price range, $10 to $75. Hand sewing and deconstruction of fabrics, such as delicate chiffon and beaded lace, as well as mid-level and complex work like tapering sides, shifting the neckline, and reshaping a structured bodice, will help drive prices up from $100 to more than $235. Prices of specific gowns will vary greatly depending on the complexity of the layers in the gown and where you live, so it's advisable to always get a solid itemized quote from a professional tailor before you agree to anything.

Can a formal gown be shortened (hemmed)?

Yes, a formal gown can indeed be shortened or “hemed,” and the difference in how the process is done is the level of complexity, from simple and cheap to more complex and more expensive for intricate fabrics. Simple hem is used for standard single-layer fabrics such as polyester and crepe, and is a quick and easy process, which keeps alteration costs low. But if the gown is layered with tulle, delicate lace trim, or has lots of beading or an original patterned border of horsehair, it will be best to have it shortened by a professional to avoid fraying the original design by hand, which could alter the gown's shape. The key is always to come to the length in the shoes and undergarments you intend to wear, so the tailor can make the fitting with the exact hemline 1 inch from the ground.

What is a 'standard length' for a formal gown?

The standard length of a formal gown is generally a total of 5'8″ to 5'9″ in height from the hollow of the throat to the floor, including heels. This uniform measurement is the basis for most designers when creating evening wear to make sure the fabric falls just right on the silhouette that most people would wear to the show. For people who are taller than 5'9" when wearing their event shoes, the gown may drop too low to the floor and must be professionally hemmed, or you may need to call customer service and ask if the designer will provide an option for 2-5 inches of length.

What are the most flattering formal gown styles for plus-size figures?

A-line gowns and empire waist silhouettes provide the most universally flattering and comfortable fit for plus-size figures.
