If your bestie is about to get married, she might have popped the question, asking you to be her maid of honor. If you said yes, which you most likely did, then you should be prepared to give a maid of honor speech.

If you’re good at writing and making speeches, you might not have a lot to worry about, but there’s no such thing as being too prepared. Right? This preparation is even more important if you don’t consider yourself a good speaker, or you think the crowd could make you lose your train of thought.

Here are some tips to help you make a killer maid of honor speech.

It isn’t really about you

Yes, it is your speech, but it’s not about you because it’s neither your birthday nor wedding. Of course, you need to introduce yourself briefly and tell everyone about your relationship with the bride and the couple. But, nobody wants to know anything else about you other than this, so you need to turn your attention to the couple at this point.

Begin with your bestie, the bride

As the maid of honor, you should begin with the bride, who is expected to be close to you, from whose eyes you must have viewed most of the relationship. Talk about what/who you knew your friend to be before she met her boo, and how meeting him changed her life for the better. Focus on the good things, as this is not the time to mention issues they might have had or your misgivings about their relationship.

Then talk about your relationship with the newlyweds

Move on from the bride to talk about your relationship with the couple, and the fun moments you have had, and maybe throw in some embarrassing stories, provided they are not inappropriate for the setting. Talk about how much of a joy it has been to see their relationship blossom until its current point.

Be specific and descriptive

When writing this speech, bear in mind that you need to personalize things and really describe the couple, not just using generic words like ‘they are so sweet’ or ‘she is so kind’ Give instances, and experiences, and tell a story that’s unique and personal.

Don’t talk too much

No matter how interesting or touching your story is, people will begin to check their wristwatches once the 5-minute mark is reached. It is very important to keep your speech between 2 and 5 minutes to ensure you still have everyone’s attention. You can’t possibly say everything, even in an entire day, so talk about only the most important parts.
